Hi there and welcome to my blog! My name is Erik and I’m a new MBA student at the University of Oxford (Saïd Business School). Over the next twelve months you will get the chance to follow my MBA journey through the written word, and I also hope to get in some videos and other media into the story.
In this first entry, I’d like to share with you a few of my first impressions from the MBA launch. The term here at Oxford normally starts in the first week of October, but our intense MBA started two weeks earlier than that. This meant that we had all of Oxford for ourselves for a few weeks, and could spend our time exploring and learning in a relaxed environment. That being said, the schedule has been intense from day 1, with guest speakers, taster lectures and networking events basically every single evening. The first days of introductions meant meeting the 340 classmates all at once, which felt both exhilirating and overwhelming at once. Now when a few more days have passed, I am finally getting some perspective and am starting to look forward to the rest of the year. To give you a sense of the kind of insights we picked up just in the first couple of days, these are three of the alumni/guest speakers which already came to talk with us:
Torsten Reil – founder of Natural Motion which was acquired by Zynga for $0.5bn
Colin Smith – Olympic medallist in rowing
Dominic Barton – global managing director for McKinsey
I can safely say that my expectations for the launch were vastly surpassed. While I had high thoughts of the program even before I started, hearing the global no. 1 at McKinsey talk about leadership in the 21st century made me feel 100% in the right place. Now let’s see what’s coming next as the term really takes off.
